CONELRAD/ Cold War Information!  

Here's are two terrific sources of information about the Conelrad, (CONtrol of ELectronic RADiation system established by President Truman in 1951; and the reason behind those little marks on the dials at 640 and 1240 on nearly all collectible portables. The first, www.conelrad.com is full of mid-century history and nostalgia. 

Scanner enthusiast Harry Marnell has a whole site dedicated to Los Angeles public safety radio, and includes a section on the "war era". Be sure to scroll down to play the audio file of Dennis James explaining the system. You will need a medial player that can play MP3 files over the internet.
